A mere 30 minute ride from Rotterdam, you can find the ultimate postcard picture of Kinderdijk. The tiny village has gained a lot of traction through its high concentration of windmills in authentic Dutch “polder” countryside. This is no surprise, since the windmill complex of Kinderdijk was added to the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage list because of its unique character. Lonely Planet even added Kinderdijk to the list of the 500 best places on the planet. Visit this site early in the morning, when there won’t be many visitors around and you’ll get the mysterious effect of the morning mist. BONUS.
For €8 you can visit an actual operating windmill. You can also make a boat ride along the windmills for €5,50. However, even more exciting is when you start your boat journey from the city center of Rotterdam. If you take waterbus 202, you’ll get a unique sightseeing experience through the city, across the rural areas and finally end up in Kinderdijk. Because this is actually “standard” public transport and not a tourist boat, you’ll only pay €13. DOUBLE BONUS.
What are you waiting for? Hop on that boat and let’s see some windmills 🙂
